Then for the mage skill tree focus on "order magic" and reaching "summoner" ,and make these skills strong - that is, if you manage to find/buy a "summon phoenix" spell. Try and make your paladin learn "Learning" "Persuasion" and "Voice of the dragon". I only used bears and swordsmen in the absolute earliest game, they died to fast. Have your pet dragon buld walls, so it takes time for the enemy to reach your units. Just try and get moral enough through skills and items. Assasins as well, I used them a lot in early/mid game. Later, orc shamans, and of course dragons. My early games best units was archers ( later - elven archers ), inquisitors or/and royal snakes, sea dogs, paladins when possible, beholders and evil beholders, royal thorns, royal griffins. This way, you will be able to reach a lot of places, and have a lot more options for units. Which of course is true for finding lots of items and money as well. For a strategy, try and get as many maps as possible, luring the guardians away ( when they are too strong ), then quicly snatched the maps.
